As we walk into yoga studios we often smell the aroma of incense, candles or oils floating in the air. When I walk into a yoga studio and smell these scents, instantly my shoulders drop down a couple of inches, my jaw loosens and my body relaxes and feels the peace. Scent is such a huge part of yoga, meditation and letting go. The amazing scents wafting in the air is only a part of the yoga experience. It’s pleasing to only one of our senses…. smell, but what about our sense of sight?
Choosing the color of your mat affects your yoga practice and the impact of how you feel. I know some people who switch mats throughout the week depending on their moods and what their goals are for class.
If you are buying a new mat, then think about these following questions:
- What feeling do you desire?
- What is your intention?
- What color makes you feel more positive?
- What is my first choice when I look at all of the colors?
I usually use a pink mat. Bright colors like yellows and oranges make me feel happy so I choose a mat that’s bright and vibrant…like how I want to feel. According to the Yoga Mat Chat, those who use pink mats have a strong personality, are bold, know what they want, have lots of friends, are giving and sweet. I’ll take it!
Let’s look at what your mat color says about you:
RED: You are energetic and know what you desire. You go for it without hesitating! You feel rooted down and have a flair for life. The chakra associated is the ROOT making you grounded. You love your home life and like decorating your space.
PINK: You are bright and vibrant and love to help others. You have a strong personality along with lots of friends because you are caring. The chakra associated with this is the ROOT. You desire to feel grounded, even though your head may be in the clouds sometimes.
ORANGE: You are very creative and have a wonderful imagination. You can bring new ideas to life easily. You are grateful and appreciate the little things in life. Full moons are your muse and you grow during this time. You are warm and balanced. The chakra associated is the SACRAL opening to sexuality, intimacy and emotions.
YELLOW: You are hopeful for the future, always happy and have a joy in your heart that is contagious! You are born to be the center of attention and when you set your mind to do a task…you do it. You stand up and are a natural leader. The chakra associated with this the SOLAR PLEXIS. This shows you are full of energy and vitality.
GREEN: You are intelligent and no matter what age you are…you feel youthful! You are more inclined to love outdoor activities and nature. You connect to Mother Earth and feel the universal energy and how we are all connected. You keep friends for a lifetime and are full of compassion. The chakra associated with this is the HEART. You are extremely empathic and give love to everyone freely.
BLUE: You are all about being honest and you are trustworthy. This combined with being strong, steady and calm is a wonderful combination! You know how to communicate and can negotiate and bring everyone into agreement. You are a natural born story teller and people listen to what you have to say. The chakra associated is the THROAT. Not only are you a good talker, but you also take the time to listen to others.
PURPLE (DARK PURPLE, INDIGO): You love being mysterious with a touch of class added. You are wise and offer suggestions freely. You are a dreamer and a deep meditator. You connect with others easily and have a high sense of empathy. You can feel other’s emotions which makes you a very caring person! The chakra associated is the THIRD EYE. Your empathy comes from being intuitive.
VIOLET (LIGHT PURPLE): You are very spiritual and can connect to the divine power easily. You are serene and your calmness rubs off on the people around you. You desire to express your true feelings and do so. You are understanding and often blissful in your journey. The chakra associated is the CROWN. You are one with the world.
WHITE: You are gentle, authentic and peaceful. Often you are innocent and always expect the best from others. You are quiet and like calmness in your world. You are organized, clean and bathe in the energy of the spirit’s light. The chakra associated is the CROWN. Since the chakras have shifted colors because of the world’s increased awareness of the divine, the crown has changed from violet to a bright white. You open yourself to the spirit and your pure faith gets stronger every day. White is where all colors are present.
BLACK: You are powerful and loving. You have the ability to help others and you do so often. You are fashionable and have deep feelings and conversations. You are open to new ideas, thoughts and philosophies. You have a very strong faith and are grounded it in. There is not one particular chakra attached to this color. Black is the absence of all colors, so it shows you are connected with the unseen. You are at peace with the future.
GREY: You are noble and subtle. You don’t tell someone what to do you guide them to make their own decision. You value security and are exceedingly independent. Many who use a grey mat enjoy being alone and are at peace with themselves. You are not an extremist; you know how to moderate. Enjoy the balanced life!
BROWN: You enjoy being outside and are grounded with Mother Earth. You are stable, and feel the connection of your entire mind, body and spirit. You are the leader of your home and know how to throw a party! You are strong and many love how genuine you are.
