My Experience with Hypnotherapy
My Experience with Hypnotherapy
By: “AJ” Amy Jo Crowell, Publisher Dallas Yoga Magazine, Founder Cosmic Yogi Festival
As I get older, I have expanded my horizons relating to my wellness plan. Not only do I practice more yoga than ever before, but because of my yoga practice I developed a daily meditation routine to focus inward, finding a spiritual connection. It’s been a journey of discovery that I intend to continue as a life long exploration.
Yoga and meditation have allowed my mind to become more open and accepting of others’ ideas, remedies and the holistic fields of healing. I am an avid reader and love to learn, but the longer I’m around the less I realize I really know. As a result, I am willing to try a variety of different healing methods. For example, I was certified in Holographic Sound Healing by Paul Hubbert this year and found an amazing, intriguing way of using sound to release pain and promote healing. I had no idea what to expect when I went to the workshop but any trepidation I may have had slipped away when I saw the real results on others and on myself. I was grateful I was able to go with an open mind and learn new techniques for not only helping myself but others as well.
Another holistic technique I use on a regular basis is acupuncture. For my first session a couple of years ago, I went to Nena Watkins at Oak Cliff Acupuncture in Dallas. She explained the process, her licenses, certifications, college degrees and what the session would entail. It only took one needle for me to feel the energy opening up in that area. After my session, I was completely in awe that my lower back pain was gone. I am grateful I tried something new and different.
There an array of other remedies I have tried including Chinese Herbs, Emotional Freedom Technique and Kundalini breathwork. Every time when I have tied something new and “off the beaten path” of modern American medicine I have had positive experiences and found them extremely beneficial. I continue to practice these methods in my life today.
So, when the idea of hypnotherapy or hypnotism presented itself to me, I was more than curious. I gave Nanci Duplant a call to schedule a consultation and find out more about it. If I’m being honest, I was a little uneasy about the idea of being hypnotized. Could she make me jump up and down and cluck like a chicken? Unfortunately, the stereotypes about this being hypnotized are everywhere. Even on television there are shows where the hypnotists have someone jumping up and down and scratching like a monkey with the audience wildly laughing. But after talking to Nancy on the phone she put me at ease and I kept an open mind and went to my appointment.
Nanci Duplant is a highly trained professional Hypnotherapist in good standing and she has been practicing for decades. When I entered her lovely home for my session, I felt an immediate calmness. The atmosphere felt like I was in a relaxing spa. Nanci’s kind, loving spirit shined and made me feel like I was right where I was supposed to be. All the stereotypes were immediately dismissed after talking to her. Nanci shared, “Much of the mystery about hypnosis comes from confusion about what can be done and what cannot be done during the procedure. A hypnotized person is not asleep or in some strange trance like state of mind. The subject is aware of all that is happening around them. The person will be able to remember suggestions made during the session.” It was obvious she was a light worker who was there to help.
A great definition for HYPNOSIS is a human condition involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness, and an enhanced capacity to suggestion. Nanci explains this best, “A person who is hypnotized is able to ignore a disagreeable suggestion or instantly return to full consciousness. During hypnosis, in which one’s conscious mind has been distracted, their mind can then absorb positive and fresh information and suggestions.” It is important to Nanci to make the public more informed about Hypnosis including educating them on not only the myths but also the benefits.
She explained, “A person’s self-esteem can manifest in many different extremes. Habitual extremes can have a very negative effect on a person’s quality of life. Over-achievers and under-achievers are often acting out esteem issues. Hypnosis can allow the underlying cause and effect to be examined. The client may be able to recall an experience or time in life when esteem was threatened or compromised. In a relaxed state of mind, positive suggestions can replace negative thoughts and actions. Self-esteem is extremely important to a person’s overall health.”
It is also noted that Hynotherapy can assist with controlling pain and assists in healing. She has helped people of all ages over the years from revitalizing self confidence in high school students to relieving pain of cancer patients.
My session started with Nanci asking questions while I answered giving her an idea of what I wanted to focus on during the session. Together we decided she would have me focus on increasing my motivation, reaching my goals and releasing anything holding me back. I was excited at this point and ready to start.
She closed the shades, turned off the bright lights, had gentle nature music playing, scent of essential oils were in the air and put me in a big cushy chair that reclined back and massaged. At this point, I was in heaven and knew I wouldn’t have any problem relaxing or following her soft voice. I completely trusted her and would be able to drift away to her suggestions.
I had no idea what this experience would bring but I thought it would be like a meditation class where we leave our bodies for a short period of time. Nanci started her session by telling a descriptive story with me standing on at the ocean waters, looking at the crystal blue waters and feeling the white sand on my feet. There was a canoe and she instructed me to take the canoe and row it out into the ocean and it was guided to a small cove with a cave. In the cave was a treasure box and I was to open it….
After this point, I vaguely remember much. I felt like I was rocketed into the fourth dimension. I was in the deepest, most distant meditation I had ever experienced before. I then heard Nanci’s voice telling me to open my eyes as she counted down to ten. As I opened my eyes, the room felt brighter, I felt lighter, my head was clear and I felt completely energized and refreshed. I felt I could do anything I desired! I asked Nanci how long the session lasted and I was dumbfounded when she told me almost an hour. It felt like only 5 minutes had gone by…time really does fly in hypnosis! She explained during the entire session she continued to talk and give positive suggestions to my subconscious. Nanci also gave me a seashell from the experience so I could carry it with me or put it on my desk so I could bring myself back to focus on my intentions, feelings and the session. After another session, she gave me an enchanted rose quartz heart, known for heart healing.
I felt incredible! Better than I had in a long time. Not only physically but mentally as well. I have gone to several sessions and we continue to focus on my personal needs and motivation. The level of relaxation is unsurpassed and the freedom I feel when I awaken is remarkable. I will continue going regularly and exploring and learning more about myself through the magical world of HYPNOTISM. Once again, I am grateful I had enough of an open mind to try something new. It was AMAZING!
