The holiday season is in full swing and for many that means time with loved ones, great food, celebrations, and gift giving. While for others it can be a time of great sadness and depression because of the loss of loved ones, estranged family relations, or financial struggles during the midst of one of the most commercialized times of year. Whatever your personal situation may be, it is the time of year the days are getting shorter and shorter; the light is literally leaving the world in greater darkness. No matter your religious beliefs, the reason there are so many holidays celebrated in so many different cultures during this season is because in times of darkness we come together to share our light with one another.
We all have light within our hearts and minds but when the world around us grows dark and the death of so many once green and vibrant things surrounds us, it is easy to succumb to fear, loneliness, and depression. This is why it is so important to have a practice that helps you connect with your own inner light whether it be yoga, prayer, meditation, socialization, or attending religious services. It is vital that we find something that can help us stay connected to life giving energy within ourselves.
I have walked in darkness with a heavy heart and troubled soul at different times in my life. I have faced down the urge to end it all and bring this life to a close because everything has seemed so bleak. As I reflect back on those times when I thought it was all for not, I now recognize the strength that has come from surrendering and letting go of the outcome. It was painful and I shed many tears as I sat alone in my own misery not knowing how I was going to make it through. I now realize that each of these times in my life is when I had been resisting a change in my own being. At each point there was something in my life that needed to change. Maybe in was behaviors that were self destructive, or relationships that no longer served me, or beliefs that were holding me back from achieving what I wanted to do with my life. In each instance, there was a lesson for me that I had been avoiding.
There is nothing wrong with the desire to isolate oneself and remove yourself from the over stimulation that so often surrounds us. Just as the trees around us shed their leaves and draw their energy into themselves and other animals retreat into their burrows, we too are allowed draw into ourselves and spend time with the only one who will always be there for us. I believe this can actually be healthy behavior as long as we don’t allow ourselves to begin a self destructive thought process of what we “should” be feeling.
There is nothing wrong with experiencing sadness or depression during this time of year. The whole world around us is literally dying as the days get colder. It would be abnormal if we didn’t experience some sense of loss or a feeling that we are out of control of changes that are happening around us. It is important for each of us to realize that there are many things out of our control and that at some point all things must end and what are often labeled as negative feelings are perfectly natural and healthy to experience.
There have been many times in my life that I have spent avoiding discomfort which has only led to greater pain down the line. When we can take the time to spend with ourselves in the midst of sadness and depression without judgement or labels then we open the door to becoming stronger, healthier human beings. We are very rich and vibrant beings that are meant to experience the full spectrum of emotions. When we deny the unpleasant ones our attention they will find away to be expressed in some other form whether through illness or mishap. I encourage you this holiday season as you celebrate and have time with your loved ones; make sure that you are also spending time with yourself. Take some time for self care and self reflection. You are your greatest asset and you deserve to be nurtured as well.
