Feeling Burnt Out, Afraid & Overwhelmed? Try Practicing, “Self-Care”
By: Jacqueline Hayes, Fortune 500 Speaker, Empowerment Consultant, Three-Time Author
Most people don’t like to admit it, but the bottom line is that YOU are the most important person in the world. Unfortunately, so many of us forget this and wind up neglecting ourselves and living for other people. And if you’re feeling burnt out then maybe this is something you should address.
The psychological community refers to this idea as, “Self-care” i.e. the idea that you should take care of yourself and strive to put yourself first. This is also something I address in my book You Are Enough: A Guide to Love, Joy, Peace, Freedom and Acceptance.
In the book, I go over some of the ways you can practice self-care. Here are some examples:
Love Yourself – nothing is more important and while this might sound simple very few people do it. The key is to forgive yourself for what you have done, no matter what, and quit beating yourself up about things which really don’t matter.
Get Quiet – for most of us there’s an incessant, non-stop conversation that’s always going on inside. The internal conversation goes on and on and on. The content of the self-talk is usually negative and unhealthy. Take a moment to observe the conversation that is going on in your mind. Does the conversation make you feel sad, defeated and depressed? Or, does the conversation make you feel strong, powerful, beautiful and special? If you answered, yes to the first and no to the latter, carve out a few minutes each day to get quiet and check in with yourself. Take a few deep breaths, lower the volume of the noise on the inside and connect with your spirit.
Dream Big – too many of us doubt and second guess our potential. We allow friends, family and associates to talk us out of going for our big dreams. Find a quiet place, get your journal and write down your big dreams. Feel them, taste them, touch them, picture your dreams manifested in your life.
Trust Yourself – the excessive external noise around us keeps us from tapping into and finding the wisdom within. We typically fail to trust our gut and our intuition because we have become so separate and disconnected from ourselves. Take a moment to recenter and refocus your internal compass and get back to your true north. Love yourself, trust yourself.
Ultimately, just realize that the day you were born your creator smiled with joy and love and said to the world, today is a great day. You are a precious, beautiful child and it’s time to start acting like it.
