We’ve all heard that we are supposed to be well rounded individuals. Try new things. Be open minded. Jack of all trades, master of none. Diversity is key. Or is it?
Take a moment and ask yourself: the people who make it to the top of their game, the top of their field, do you think they got there by being well rounded? Or did they sacrifice some areas of their lives in order to pursue greatness in specific areas?
Think of a successful athlete. How many hours spent perfecting their craft? A professional chef specializes. They may make an amazing eclair and a lousy brisket.
So, stop trying to master everything. Stop trying to be perfect. Make the effort to do your best but don’t use your energy in ways that aren’t true to who you are. Heck, I don’t plan to take up needlepoint anytime soon, but grandma can knit as many doilies as she wants. It’s okay not to be good at everything.
Focus your energy on enhancing your strengths. What are you good at? What brings you joy? Put your energy there! Would you rather be mediocre at many things or fantastic at a few things?
Find what you love and pursue it with your whole heart. Stop listening to other people’s opinions about what they think you should do. Be true to you. Embrace your strengths.
Do you have a natural aptitude or skill in a particular area? Good with people? Organize ideas? Empathetic? It’s okay if your strength is unusual. It’s okay if your strength seems strange. Embrace it and use it!
And once you identify what you’re good at, find a way for it to bring joy to your life. If you can, bring joy to other people’s lives. And if you can figure out how to monetize it, then you have truly found the holy grail.
How can you monetize your passion? Maybe you like to help people so what careers might you explore? You could follow a traditional career path like doctor or lawyer. But don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Maybe you want to be involved in nonprofits.
Maybe your strength will lead you somewhere non-traditional. Maybe you need to be your own boss and create your own dream job.
But no matter what, be true to you. Find a career that brings you joy. If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day of your life. You get to wake up with an attitude of joy and enthusiasm. You get to tell yourself, “Look what I get to do today!”
If you don’t love what you do, then stop and reassess. Stop making yourself miserable. If you need help, seek it. There is no shame in pursuing happiness.
Get out of the mind jail you are trapped in that says, “I have to work so it doesn’t matter if I’m happy at work or not. A job is to be merely endured.”
If you’re going to do something 8 to 12 hours a day, make sure it’s something you’re passionate about! Use your gifts and talents.

]]>Presented by Mandala Publishing
Dallas Yoga Magazine is honored to share with you a new book coming out this month (June 18,2019). This new book, Yoga and the Art of Mudras, is a guided journey into the alchemy of asana (yoga pose) and mudra (symbolic hand gesture). Brazilian-born yogini, dancer, and author Nubia Teixeira has been practicing and teaching traditional yoga and classical Indian Odissi dance for over 26 years. In this book, she fuses her passion for yoga and dance with her love for bhakti (devotion). In so doing, she has created a unique, original, and contemporary yoga system that encompasses all three healing arts.
Through beautiful photographs of each yoga pose, Nubia guides the reader in a meaningful union of hand gestures with asanas. Drawing, in particular, on expressions and hand gestures found in Indian dance, these newly developed poses will help transform a person’s Hatha yoga practice into an embodied devotional and artistic yogic experience.
Nubia’s yoga-mudra system combines expressions that are deeply rooted in the heart of traditional yoga, classical Indian Odissi dance, and inspirational bhakti yoga storytelling. Honoring the gifts of all three systems, Nubia Teixeira shares a beautiful and truly original voyage into the heart of devotional yoga practice.
This is what others have to say about the book:
“The hands are extensions of the heart, reflecting what is in your heart. Mudras tell stories with the hands. Nubia’s hands express the celestial stories and songs of her innermost heart—the eternal abode of Divine Love where God and the soul dance in ecstatic delight. Nubia is an other-worldly apsara who has taken birth amongst us mortals—to show us the keys to the heart of heaven and how to open the secret door. This is an incredibly important book”
~ Sharon Gannon, founder of Jivamukti Yoga
“If you think you understood yoga—think again. In this elegant volume of thoughts and images, Odissi dance master Nubia Teixeira reveals the power of mudras to awaken and unite our many disparate selves. An overlooked component of complete yoga practice is finally receiving its due. A must-read for serious yogis.”
~ Joshua Greene, author of Gita Wisdom

An amalgamation of Chinese, Indian and Bhutanese culture can be seen here at everything from the cuisines to the major markets like Teesta Bazar. Its proximity to Eastern Himalayas has led to a thriving horticulture business in this region with the cultivation of many exotic flowers. In particular, Cactus production is one of the major tourist attractions here. The other attractions include Hiking and River rafting at Teesta River. The best time to visit would be in summers and Monsoon during March to September to get the ideal climate for exploring.

A hill station tucked away from all the hustle bustle of the nearby cities, Matheran is a popular weekend getaway in Maharashtra for people looking to step away from their busy daily life. It is filled with scenic viewpoints and is also pollution free due to its status as a vehicle free zone. Keep your walking shoes ready as trekking is the best way to explore this Eco Sensitive Zone. Louisa, Alexander and Panorama point provide the best views of the city. Monsoon season (July-September) is the best time to visit because of the lush vegetation during this time.
Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh
Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Pasighat is surrounded by scenic mountains and beautiful waterfalls. It has something for everyone and appeals to every tourist—Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary would be ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and Kekar Monying would leave historical buffs asking for more. Unlike other popular travel destinations, Pasighat still remains unspoiled by commercialization and is still a place steeped in history and culture. The best season to visit would be the winter season (October to March) as the climate remains the most favourable during this time.
Break the monotony of your daily life and leave all your stress behind by taking a vacation in any of these cities.

Ever feel like your day is upside down? Hooray for you! Make it intentional and develop an Inversion Practice. Often, we think of inversion practices as only for the most skilled yogis who can do headstands and handstands. Not true! Anyone at any level can do inversions. Read on for the benefits and suggestions.
Inversions are simply yoga poses that position your heart higher than your head. Simple inversions are part of many yoga classes. You can take the benefits to the next level by carving out time regularly to focus on gaining experience in these playful and beneficial poses.
The health advantages of an inversion practice are many:
Increased muscle strength. Shoulder, arm, and core muscles are all activated during inversions. We often find ourselves with stronger lower bodies than upper bodies. Inversions balance us out. Improved circulation. When your body is inverted, the blood flow to your brain is notably increased. This helps to improve your ability to concentrate, process tasks, and maintain mental stamina. Also, blood carries oxygen and nutrients that nourish your brain. The increased flow from inversions contributes to better brain health. Increased energy. Some inversions can help heat the body (particularly headstands, handstands, and forearm stands). This increased heat produces higher energy levels. Some inversions cool the body (such as shoulder stands and wall t-stand). Cooling inversions activate the parasympathetic nervous system, calming the body and mind and giving you a sense of balance and peace. Increased immunity. Your lymphatic system is the foundation for your body’s immune system. Lymph moves through your body picking up toxins to be eliminated. This process occurs through muscle contraction and gravity. When you are inverted, lymph moves more easily to important areas like the lungs and can protect you from disease. Improved balance and posture. With the core strength built from inversions, your physical balance will improve greatly, protecting you from falls and keeping your body synchronized, which will reduce injuries in general. Good balance and posture also contribute to a strong spine, which is vital for lifelong health. Gain patience and confidence. Yoga is a journey. Every time you try an inversion, you learn to be patient with yourself. Start with what is easy and give yourself permission to keep challenging yourself with more difficult postures. Each time you fall out, patiently try again. You are human. With practice, you will achieve mastery. Accomplishing something that took effort will bring confidence that will carry you in other areas of your life as well. Fun! Remember the spontaneity of handstands, cartwheels, and hanging upside down off the jungle gym as a kid? Practicing inversions is joyful. You’re pushing your body in a new way, and you will delight in the sensations that will arise. Here are a few great inversion postures:
Beginning inversions
Plow Pose Shoulder Stand Wall T-stand Forward Fold Down DogMore advanced inversions
Handstand Bridge Pose Wheel Pose Crow Pose Headstand Feathered Peacock (Forearm Stand)As with any yoga posture, be safe and prudent. If an inversion hurts in a way that is not just a new stretch, don’t do it. Also, inversions should be accompanied by a counter-pose, like fish pose or a reclining twist. If you are in doubt, ask an experienced yoga teacher to help guide you in what’s right for you. At Horizon Hot Yoga, most of our teachers have an inversion practice and would be happy to demonstrate the proper form of inversions and help you develop your own routine.
Interested in learning from a master?
Carson Clay Calhoun is one of the most famous inversion artists in the world. He’s a self-described “Handstand-Up Comedian” and combines his love for being upside-down with his natural ability to make people laugh. During his classes, workshops, and retreats, students are encouraged to push their limits and explore their edge, while maintaining a playful attitude. In every instance, you can be sure to break a sweat, learn something new, and leave with a smile on your face. As a movement enthusiast, Carson incorporates a variety of disciplines into his yoga classes, which focus on building a strong mind and body.
Carson is presenting workshops at Horizon Hot Yoga in Frisco on April 1 – 4, including an Ashtanga Vinyasa Remix, Power Vinyasa, Beginners Handstand Workshop, and a special 20-hour Rocket Yoga Teacher Intensive. Visit www.horizonhotyoga.com for more information!

]]>The post Should You do Yoga Barefoot or Wear Yoga Socks? appeared first on Dallas Yoga Magazine.
]]>By: Dr. Charlton Woodly, Board-Certified Podiatrist
Whether you’re a dedicated yogi or just like to “namaste” on occasion, you’ve probably done yoga barefoot. This is a requirement at many studios, mostly to prevent tracking in outside dirt. Additionally, many studios ask that its members wear special socks designed for yoga; other studios may give you a choice in the matter. Here are my thoughts on practicing yoga barefoot versus wearing yoga socks:
Yoga is a great form of exercise in terms of foot health. It stretches the foot and toe muscles and can be a great help in treating common foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. Doing yoga barefoot is perfectly safe, as long as your mat is well sanitized. If the mat is not clean, you can risk fungal infection. Additionally, make sure that you are on the proper surface before doing yoga barefoot. Being barefoot in a clean studio is great but be cautious when doing yoga outside, such as in a park.
Another perk of doing yoga barefoot is that when you lack any extra foot support, such as socks, your feet have to do a bit more work to hold some of those tougher poses. The same goes for balancing poses, such as tree poses. Your muscles have to work to hold you balanced.
Wearing yoga socks is also a great option for those who are uncomfortable being barefoot. Socks are also helpful when you are doing yoga outside of the studio. They prevent against common foot infections and help with gripping the mat. Additionally, depending on the type of sock you purchase, they can help relieve foot pain. The type of sock with toe separators can provide effective foot pain relief that is caused by restrictive footwear, standing for long time, exercise or strenuous sports activities. These are also effective in preventing bunions in feet.
Here are some local spots around Dallas where you can purchase yoga socks:
Yogapod Dallas Pure Barre Uptown LululemonIf you have a pre-existing injury, it is best to be seen by your healthcare provider prior to beginning yoga or any new workout regimen. Additionally, always be sure to tell your yoga instructor about any injuries that you have and they can suggest modifications to the poses. You should never feel embarrassed to make any modifications as needed. It is better to make adjustments than to further your injury. If you have an injury that is impacting your daily life and your yoga practice, I suggest seeing a specialist. They may recommend a brace or some type of athletic tape, or they may suggest a minimally invasive surgery if needed. My clinic specializes in flat feet and bunion surgery that is a quick remedy to these type of ailments.
All in all, I would say that using yoga socks is better for your feet because it protects against common infections. However, if you are in a clean environment, such as a yoga studio, and want to challenge the muscles in your foot, feel free to do yoga barefoot. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference.
Yoga is a great way to stretch the foot muscles as well as help with anxiety. Yoga works with knees and the muscles throughout your entire leg. Whether you decide to wear yoga socks or to go barefoot, you still will get all the benefits of yoga.

]]>The post Transcendental Meditation: Finding True Self appeared first on Dallas Yoga Magazine.
]]>A meditator who practices Transcendental Meditation asked MARTH a question. She wanted to know a relationship between “transcending death” and “the true self or love” which MARTH mentioned in his message.
MARTH was a trainer of a self-help seminar for many years when he was young. He witnessed numerous number of people return to their true self through various practices even temporarily. He said he experienced his own ego breaking down many times. He strangely found his fear for death was gone many times, when he loved the people, when his ego diminished, when he was truly supported and loved, when he felt truly connected as one with many people in seminars.
They went through various practices in the seminars, in which he experienced his fear for death was gone when they felt love for each other, in other words, when he felt it “OK to die now.” And this same thing happened every time, hundred times and thousand times. He wondered why and examined it thoroughly. That is because “death” has been the biggest fear for him since childhood. To overcome it has been an important theme for him. He has come to believe it very firmly and said, “That’s right. When we return to the real self, when we love and are loved, there is no fear for death. On the contrary, we will feel so much love, happiness and bliss that we even think it OK to die now.” Although he had had deep meditative experiences many times by then, what he experienced as the true self in seminars was much bigger.
“Humanity has developed separated societies, and we are separated with each other and isolated… I could say we are in a lonely, sad and suffering environment in a sense. It is because it is not our true quality. Our true quality is that of oneness, of love. Therefore, when we return to our psychological home, we transcend fear for death…more than that, we feel so much love as we feel it is OK to die now.”
“It is said women use the phrase ‘to die’ during ecstasy while making love. That is, I think people transcends even death when they feel tremendous ecstasy, joy, and happiness. We feel so happy that we say, “It is OK to die now” when we are loved and treasured by people. That may be our true quality as the whole universe. I think people return to the true self and transcend death when they love and are loved, and it is not related to our knowledge but to our mentality. More than that, entering into love means no death. No, on the contrary, you feel so much love that you can accept death. However, all of us are in different circumstances however physically affluent we are in the current societies. We cannot stay with our true self there. Therefore, we are not embraced by so much love that we feel it OK to die now, even among our families and friends. I wonder how happy and how blissful we will feel if we are otherwise.
MARTH says he has always thought as such and strived to convey it through his music.
And his conclusion out of such experiences is that true human nature is love, and we realize love, which is beyond death, and return to the original self when we love and are loved. There is true happiness when we live with it. Otherwise, our life will be sad, miserable and fearful, and there is no meaning for life even if we have status, a fame and money.
MARTH humbly said, “I don’t know if my story will be of any use for people… However, it was a great awareness for a simple trainer of a self-help seminar.”
He sends out such insightful messages as above to the world through his official website http://www.marth-healing.com.
More about MARTH:
MARTH is a composer, producer and a singer of healing music who actually started the music genre as a pioneer. He has released more than 2000 titles of CDs from labels from Japan and Hawaii. MARTH’s healing music has been appreciated by meditators, yoga practitioners, and others of the world.
He also offers the World #1 shared meditation app. called “INSIGHT TIMER” it is a platform where MARTH has given away his music to meditators for FREE. One of the songs has ben played on the app almost 390,000 times in just a few years and ranked #1 in the instrumental section.

]]>The post Invoke Beauty from Within at Yoga Teaching Teacher Training in India appeared first on Dallas Yoga Magazine.
]]>By: Manmohan Singh, Yoga Teacher in India
Yoga teacher training can be an incredibly beautiful experience once you find the right one for you. Here’s some information to put you on the right track to finding the perfect yoga teacher training journey in India.
Yoga was Born in India
While there can be a number of yoga trainings close to home, there is none that can compare to teacher training where yoga was born and with the beauty of India. Pack your bags for the long haul and set out exploring India from its majestic northern frontiers to the pristine seas in the south.
Yoga Teacher Training in India is an experience, truly one of a kind. You will find there are more segments of meditation compared to your usual yoga classes in the United States along with more prana and inner-life centric exercises with breath intensification.
Picture this…Outdoor Yoga with Surya Namaskara on the seas of Kerala at daybreak, an evening at the Ganges in Rishikesh watching the stars shine as you go deeper into meditation or looking over the stoic Himalayas whose distinct beauty is part of the spiritual essence of India.
Community Life with Other Yogis
There is nothing like getting back into your faith or finding it with yoga. Maybe you are disenchanted with your current life situation and seeking inner freedom or seeking soul revitalization…whatever your reason for your journey you will find a happy tribe of yogis at the ashrams. These yogis are all striving for a better self and are extremely supportive of each other. You will find lifelong friends from all over the world at Yoga Teacher Trainings in India. A special bond will be formed with these new friendships that you will have forever.
When you attend teaching trainings in India you live the community life at ashrama-style centers centering on yoga and the yogi lifestyle. You will explore places and cultures together as a community. You will again start noticing more beauty everywhere. It’s a time for falling in love with yoga, yourself and the magic of the world.
Mindset & Therapy
Having a negative body perception limits perceiving beauty in yourself. Too fat, too skinny, too dark– such are the traps we tell ourselves which stops us from connecting with the true beauty of our soul. Yoga teaches you to let go of the negative and love yourself to the soul level.
Yoga therapy is another important segment of yoga teacher training dealing with any illness at its roots through holistic measures of lifestyle modification, dietary regulation, regular exercise, and happiness meditation.
It is important to keep body-positive approaches separate from yoga therapy. While there must be acceptance and appreciation of all human body types and their apparent flaws, you must be relentless to find the signs of ill-health and inner disturbances. This process will bring you healthy changes both mentally and physically that will last a life time.
Ayurvedic Lifestyle
Ayurveda is the ancient Vedic science of life, closely related to yoga and is a huge part of Yoga Teacher Training in Nepal and India where the roots of the Vedic culture is strongest. You will find beauty-oriented Ayurvedic approaches with herbal spa techniques and inner cleanses available during the training.
