Nothing is worth more than today, live today. Today is the Day!
As longevity is on the rise and in order for you to have a quality life with your body functioning well, you need to take care of yourself today and not tomorrow. Your heart, legs, joints, internal organs, and external organs all need to be healthy and functioning as you age. For all these body parts to run optimally at an older age, first, your brain, the command center of your body, needs to function at its best. Your brain accounts for two percent of your body’s weight, but it consumes about 25% of the calories you eat, and it consumes energy ten times faster than the rest of the body. Your brain is involved in everything you do.
Hence we need to nourish our brain first to nourish our body. Most of the times you worry about how you look, how your hair looks, how your skin looks, if you are slim or muscular. You worry about every part of your body that is visible but neglect your brain since you do not see it. Then at an older age, when you realize that the brain is vital for the body, it sometimes is too late. Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise and is expected to triple with no cure on the horizon. I learned that this disease starts at a very early age, about thirty years before any symptoms appear and affects about fifty percent of population who are over the age of eighty-five. This means a person, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of eighty-five years, has probably had an onset of the disease since around age fifty. If they had taken care of their brain function during these years, it could have reduced their risk for the disease. It is best to prevent the risk of Alzheimer’s and according to Dr. Daniel Amen’s book, “Change Your Brain Change your Body”, you can change your brain and your body.
In our society, we constantly face the threat of brain raiders such as, alcohol and drug use, excessive caffeine, smoking, excessive stress, negative thinking, poor diets, lack of sleep and exercise, environmental toxins, excessive TV or video games, cell phone usage, computer time, dehydration, brain injuries, unbalanced hormones, untreated mental disorders, etc. All these brain raiders ignore the health of the brain. What speeds up brain aging? The brain raiders accelerate brain aging.
Some of the brain fixers that can help your optimal brain function are:
- Meditation, deep breathing and relaxation practices
- Restful sleep for at least 7-8 hours
- Exercise routine
- Adding fish oil and multiple vitamins to your diets
- Cleaning your environment with indoor plants that clean the environment
- Engaging in new learning
- Brain protection, like using a helmet
- Brain envy, to love your brain and consciously eat or do activities that are good for your brain
- Sense of gratitude for everything around you
- Managing mental health by addressing stress and depression
Using these brain fixers is the best way to prevent the body from diseases such as obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, depression and sleep apnea.
The new guidelines released by American Heart Association in November 2013, states that obesity should be considered a disease. Dr. Amen says, all three major diseases – obesity, depression and Alzheimer’s are interconnected. Today, chronic depression is very common in our world. As per the World Health Organization, depression affects about 350 million people worldwide. More women are affected by depression than men and worst it could lead to suicide. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children are obese in the US. As weight increases, brain size decreases as well as its function of thinking and reasoning. The brain is involved in everything we do. A healthy brain is happier, wiser, and makes better decisions. If we balance our blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, mineral levels, hormone levels, etc. we can boost the brain reserve and make it healthy. Aging decelerates brain activity; hence you need to take care of your brain.
